Cruisers doing the “Great Loop” can traverse across the state via the Okeechobee Intracoastal Waterway, from Fort Myers and the Caloosahatchee River on the west coast through the southern channel of Lake “O” and eastward through the St. Lucie Canal and Locks to Stuart on the east coast. From Stuart, cruisers have the option to head south via the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway (AICW) or head out the St. Lucie Inlet for coastal waters south or across the Gulf Stream to the northern Bahamas.

Cruisers can head north on the “Great Loop” via the AICW along American’s eastern seaboard. Stuart is also a gateway for international travel with its own customs facility at Stuart Airport and it is part of Port of Palm Beach’s Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) #135.

Martin County is truly a boater’s paradise with so many beautiful waterways, including the AICW, Peck’s Lake, the Manatee Pocket and the St. Lucie River north and south forks. Stuart is known as the Sailfish Capital of the World and is the site of annual sportfish tournaments, and where many custom luxury sportfishing yachts and center consoles are built, including the well-known Jim Smith Tournament Boats. With its many offshore artificial reefs, the Indian River Lagoon, and the St. Lucie River, recreational and commercial fishing is big local business.

The Stuart Boat Show, owned by the MIATC (Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast, a non-profit org.), is held the second weekend in January and has grown in popularity every year since its inception. The Stuart Boat Show features new and brokerage boats in-water and on-land trailers, besides top-notch marine equipment manufacturers and related lifestyle vendors. Another major annual event is the Port Salerno Seafood Festival, held the 4th Saturday in January and was originated by the Port Salerno Commercial Fishing Fleet. This event draws about 30,000 attendees to this waterfront locale and is a great event for families, featuring food and fun, Treasure Coast Wildlife’s birds, a pirate ship, vendors and more! Downtown Stuart is the site of weekend Art Festivals during “season.”

The most popular marina in Stuart is Sunset Bay Marina & Anchorage located on the deep-water St Lucie River at the foot of the Roosevelt Bridge. The marina has 198 slips and can accommodate vessels up to 150’ in length, along with 69 moorings for transient and long-term stays. A Captain’s lounge, Sailor’s Return restaurant and Gilbert’s Coffee Bar are onsite. From the marina, it’s a short walk to Stuart’s wonderful downtown with quaint shops, museums, art galleries, restaurants, Kilwin’s ice-cream and chocolates and the 2-mile Riverwalk alongside the St Lucie River. The sunsets are amazing from Sunset Bay which faces directly west.

Across the river from Sunset Bay to the north shore, is Waterway Marina with 51 slips for maximum 65’ boats. Dockside depth is 6-ft. Enjoy lunch or dinner at The Deck restaurant. Also located on the north shore is the Harborage Yacht Club & Marina, which was completely renovated in 2019. It features the Tidewater restaurant and resort amenities. Conveniently located 5 minutes off the AICW and 7 minutes from the Inlet, the marina welcomes seasonal, transient or liveaboards. The Riverwatch Marina on the St. Lucie south fork can accommodate transient or long-term vessels up to 60’ and has two lifts in wet slips (24,000 and 50,000 lbs.).

The Manatee Pocket and Port Salerno area of south Stuart is another wonderful area. Port Salerno is historically a fishing village and a fleet of commercial fishermen still operate out of docks on the Pocket. There are loads of waterfront restaurants and within walking distance in this quaint area. The waterfront area of the Fish House Art Center features a short Riverwalk that connects to Twisted Tuna restaurant’s large deck area with outdoor bar and floating dock band stage. Excellent sushi… Next door is the Manatee Island Grill & Bar and across the canal is Shrimpers Bar & Grill, both are waterfront and have dockage for boats to tie up for lunch or dinner. Within easy walking distance is King Neptune; bring your catch and have it cooked to your liking. Also located on the Pocket, is Pirate’s Cove Resort & Marina. The marina has 50 wet slips and can accommodate boats up to 100’ and offers full services and a fueling dock.

The Pirate’s Tiki Bar is on the marina level with its own sand “beach.” Main restaurant and bar are on main level, inside. Next door to Martin County’s Sandsprit Park on the no-wake zone Pocket, are Sailfish and Finest Kind Marinas featuring 55 wet slips and can accommodate vessels up to 85’. The marinas’ slips are available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Overnight stays are accepted; be sure to reserve your slip. These marinas are closest to the St. Lucie Inlet. Martin County has plans to construct a mooring field in the Manatee Pocket and other locations, to help accommodate the many visiting boaters.
