“Stone Free” 2004 Wauquiez Centurion 40S – Blue Water Cruiser
This is a beautiful performance cruiser which is ready for new owners. “Stone Free” has been upgraded by the owners to a true “blue water ocean vessel” and will be on the East Coast of the US this spring and summer and ready for viewing. She has cruised in Europe, crossed the Atlantic in 2023 and is well appointed for further offshore adventures. This boat has been well maintained, and its upkeep allows for this vessel to shown like contemporary cruisers of Scandinavian build and make.
Not only a very comfortable cruising yacht, but this vessel is also fast with superior cruising speed. The Centurion 40S is a 40.52ft. fractional rigged sloop designed by Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design and built in fiberglass by Wauquiez’s Henri Chantier commissioned in 2004.
The Wauquiez Centurion 40S is a yacht with attractive, comfortable accommodations ensconced in a fast, handsome hull powered by a strong sail plan consisting of a battened (4) cruising main, Genoa on Facnor roller (Pentex,140%) Jib (High Aspect 110%) Gennaker and more recently a ‘furling Code Zero’ on a carbon bow sprit. She’s great fun to sail with very direct and precise steering.
On Deck
The quality of the rig and fittings (Harken, Frederiksen, Andersen, Navtec), the deck design created for easy maneuvering, as well as for relaxed cruising, combine both efficiency and comfort. The teak-topped deck and seats compliment both security and esthetics. The effective long grabrails on the low cabin top, and solid lifeline, Ultra & Fortress anchors are valuable on any boat. A big roller on the bow and a remotely controlled Quick windlass inside the large foredeck locker handles anchoring tasks easily.
The transom appears to be flat, but it opens to reveal a well-designed stern platform with boarding ladder, good for swimming and dinghy deployment. The rvs ‘Arch’ holds a large solar panel and acts as storage for the Carib hypalon dinghy including the15 hp outboard engine. There’s plenty of stowage in the cockpit including on starboard side a propane locker and on port side a large locker for eight fenders. The wheel is large and runs through a trough, and the six Andersen winches (of which 3 are electric) are placed for efficient access by the crew. There is a handy line-tail locker near the companionway, as the rope spaghetti that can accumulate in the cockpit and cabin is a hazard. In the main port locker, you find ample space for the cockpit table, watermaker, spare equipment, 2 bicycles and the holding tank.
Accommodations
A few steps down the companionway ladder take you into an exceptionally pretty saloon, with rich finishes and spacious interior design. Tall sailors will appreciate this space, which is open and unobstructed overhead for its entire length and has ample headroom. The salon table with a wine rack below opens to a larger table for extra dinning space or game night. An attractive combination of a padded vinyl ceiling, blue alcantara fabric cushions, and Burmese teak wood trim sets off the beauty of the saloon.
The L-shaped galley has a front-opening fridge and separate freezer, both of which use cooled air for exchanging heat which is very efficient. The stovetop cover does double duty as a serving tray or extra counter space. The deep double sink is near the centerline, and anchor rings for a stove safety belt are standard. Plates and cutlery are from Wauquiez and add exclusiveness. The head compartment is mostly fiberglass and is easy to clean. There's a large separate shower stall with a bench and plexi glass doors. Additionally in the back of the shower is the wet locker The nav station is efficient and well organized, with plenty of space. Stowage space is well distributed throughout the boat. Sizable cabinets in the saloon, hanging lockers and cabinets (illuminated) in the forward and aft cabins, and enclosed storage in the galley will contribute greatly to safety under way and convenience at rest, whether racing or cruising. Overhead clearance is good in the aft cabin. The aft king berth has reading lights, and the layout of this space can be converted to a double berth with extra storage. The V-berth forward cabin is spacious with a seat and vanity. The salon berths have lee cloths for safe and comfortable sleeping under way. The bright and airy salon and cabin ports and windows have shades and retractable screens
Construction and system
Engine access to the 55 HP Volvo D2-55B diesel (upgrade from the standard 40HP) is excellent from the front and good through removable panels on the sides, the powerplant's installation is neat and secure, and the space is well soundproofed. The electrical panel is neatly wired to American standards, the extra 4 LifoPO4 100 amp-hours (400 amps total) to support the power-consuming luxuries is supplemented by solar panels and an Efoy fuel cell generator. A separate starter engine battery is available as well. A petrol generator acts as emergency back-up. The batteries are charged by the Mastervolt Chargemaster 12/50 amps battery charger. A Victron Phoenix 12/2000Volt inverter assures 230V when at sea. Of course, there is a hot water boiler as well as Webasto 5000 heating with outlets in all cabins. Noteworthy to mention is the Victron Energy Isolation Transformer 3600 in combination with the earth leakage circuit breaker which prevents galvanic corrosion and high inrush currents. The cockpit has a Jabsco deck wash installation with a seawater or freshwater selector.
