The interior of MUSTANG can be best described as “moderately spartan” as is fitting for her normal use as a day sailor and performance oriented Spirit of Tradition racer with little below that is unnecessary but just enough for comfortable cruising or to act as a crew bunk house at away from home regattas.
It should be noted that the entire interior of MUSTANG is finished off in the Herreshoff style of white painted surfaces accented by varnished teak joinery and trim. The description of MUSTANG’s interior from fore to aft is as follows.
Forward Cabin:
This area is completely open and is presently used for sail and gear storage. This space is large enough to install sleeping accommodations either in the way of removable pipe berths or a fixed V-berth with storage areas below the berth platform. An overhead dome light provides artificial light to this area. There is a water-tight / crash bulkhead forward and a fixed bulkhead aft with opening to the head area next aft
Head Area:
The head area occupies the space between the forward cabin bulkhead and the main bulkhead and is accessed from the main cabin by way of an opening in the main bulkhead just to the starboard side of centerline. Like forward cabin this space is mostly open. At present there are no features to the starboard side outboard of the opening from the main cabin. This space could easily be adapted to act as a hanging locker or perhaps as a space for a countertop / vanity with sink basin and water. On centerline in the head area is the mast step. Outboard (to port) of the mast step is a fixed marine toilet plumbed for discharge overboard or to the black water holding tank for shore side pump out and is also plumbed to allow for overboard discharge from the holding tank when offshore. Further outboard (to port) is a countertop and locker space that houses the head plumbing and provides for some storage space. An overhead dome light provides artificial light to the head area with additional natural light and ventilation provided by a large Lewmar deck hatch overhead. There is a privacy curtain that closes off the view thru the opening in the main bulkhead which leads aft to the main cabin next to be described.
Main Cabin Area:
Furthest aft of the interior spaces of MUSTANG is the main cabin that includes galley, navigation station and accommodations for relaxation, dining and sleeping. There are settee style berths port and starboard with water tanks located under each settee and bin storage outboard. Aft to port is the galley area with new varnished teak countertop, stainless steel sink basin, manually supplied cold water and storage areas below the countertop and storage lockers
outboard. Aft to starboard is the navigation station with electronics mounted outboard of the varnished teak countertop under which is housed a well-insulated ice box along with drawer storage and hidden trash bin. The main cabin area is well lit with overhead dome lights and brass reading lights at the aft end of each settee. Additional natural lighting is provided by fixed ports in the cabin sides. Companionway stairs aft lead to the cockpit and with stairs removed there is very good access to the engine and other mechanical systems.
