The second generation of Viking’s 57 Convertible launched in 2009, was designed to replace the 56 Convertible (model years 2004-2009). Although very similar, Viking has made refinements to the 57C’s appearance, giving her a bolder sweeping sheerline and chines, and stem rake. Above deck, her lines were softened with more noticeable curves; the flybridge profile is lower and windows are a teardrop shape. A painted metallic black mask wraps the deckhouse face to connect the frameless side windows in an elongated swoop, accentuating the 57C’s length and speed for a very exciting visual presentation!
With its state-of-the-art production facility in New Gretna, New Jersey, Viking is able to innovate in ways typically associated with custom boat builders. Feedback from the Viking tournament team and active convertible sportfish customers have helped inform Viking’s design, engineering, and construction teams to “build better boats every day” as the company motto states.
The 157 sq ft cockpit is arranged to allow walkaround space behind an (optional) full-size fish fighting chair and is ideally outfitted for tournament fishing. Cockpit features a large in-sole centerline fishbox with a split hatch for convenient opening from either side, flanked by smaller boxes that could be plumbed as a livewell or ice bin for an optional Eskimo ice machine. The insulated drink box built into salon step, could also be refrigerated. Other amenities include a large bait freezer and tackle center with 4 or 5 drawers. A new standard feature of the 57 Convertible, many of the older 56 Convertibles have been retrofitted with Viking’s observation mezzanine seating under shade of the flybridge overhang.
Access to the expertly engineered engine room is beneath a section of mezzanine seating which lifts to reveal steps down into the gleaming white awlgripped and neatly arranged space of machinery, systems, and the huge engines that power the 57C. Viking offered a choice of the reliable twin 1,360 hp or 1,550 hp MAN V12 diesels, mounted on powder-coated steel I-beams set into dedicated transverse stringers to minimize vibration and hold the powertrain in steady alignment, for a smooth ride whether trolling or at top speeds. A new innovation that Viking introduced with the 57 Convertible in 2009, is the Centralized Seawater System. This huge pump system consolidates a number of pumps for various applications such as air-conditioning, refrigeration, livewells, and more, into one unit and eliminates the need to have all the different spare pumps. The engine room is one of Viking’s superior advantages, along with its tournament-tested and time-proven hull shape and running bottom with prop pockets.
The open flybridge of the 57 Convertible is a traditional convertible arrangement with portside peninsula helm console set up with tournament-style fiberglass pod (or an optional teak pod) and single lever controls on sides. Precise fingertip control is achieved with power assisted Teleflex Sea-Star hydraulics working with Viking hull features—prop pockets, keel, Veem rudders, to keep the 57C on track, fast, and agile. Console electronics are protected with clear acrylic lids. Custom electronics packages are provided and installed by Viking’s top-notch subsidiary, Atlantic Marine Electronics. The extended bridge aft deck allows walkaround space behind the two captain and companion helm chairs. Guests are provided with seating forward of console and a starboard side bench seat with reversible backrest converts to a lounge or aft jump seat. A top-loading drink box in forward bridge area could optionally be refrigerated. Visibility from helm is excellent all around. Owners could opt for other amenities and equipment such as a drop-down electronics box or teaser reels compartment built into underside of hardtop, or a custom tuna tower built and installed by Palm Beach Towers and any number of rocket launcher rod holders, outriggers, center rigger, etc. for a turnkey from factory delivery. Viking also expertly retrofits its vessels to upgrade and update older models.
The 57 Convertible interior features Viking’s meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. The main deck salon, galley and dinette is a wide-open area that is well-appointed for comfortable life at sea. A large L-shaped couch with built-in storage and a custom cocktail table is to port upon entering the salon from cockpit. Designer materials and furnishings create an ambiance of upscale luxury. High gloss or satin hand-fitted teak joinery (or other fine wood) add glowing warmth and a traditional convertible look. A Bose Lifestyle surround sound entertainment system is housed in the credenza on opposite starboard side, along with storage and main electrical panel. Credenza abuts the U-shaped peninsula galley on forward starboard side. The galley is fully equipped for meal preparation from quick grab and go bites to more formal dinners enjoyed at the U-shaped dinette with teak table. Viking’s elegant and functional design is evident in the fully equipped galley with deep undercounter refrigerator and freezer drawer units, 3-burner electric cooktop, convection microwave oven, stainless-steel sink, plentiful cabinet and drawer storage, along with countertop space to prep and serve. Appliances are neatly hidden in cabinetry. The premium Antico flooring is easy to maintain. Two upholstered barstools provide seating at the counter overhang of galley peninsula. The dinette across from the galley on portside seats four comfortably. The large 40-42” flatscreen TV is mounted on forward bulkhead above dinette for viewing throughout the salon area.
The belowdeck 3 stateroom/2 head accommodations are arranged similar to the 56C, but the companionway of the 57C is offset to port side for a more efficient use of space. The midships master suite features an athwartship walkaround queen berth with nightstands, his/her maple-lined hanging lockers, and ensuite head with large shower stall. The forward VIP stateroom has a centerline queen berth or optional crossover double lower berth, single upper. Aft guest or crew stateroom has comfortable upper/lower bunks. The guest/day head with shower stall is between the guest staterooms and is accessible from both guest staterooms and the companionway. All staterooms have generous storage and other amenities. The laundry center with stacked washer and dryer units is on the companionway.
As with all Viking Convertibles, the 57C could be customized by the owner, selecting among the many options offered by Viking, or the owner’s after-delivery upgrades and updates, making each yacht a personalized semi-custom boat. Today, many are loaded with the latest electronics, amenities, equipment, and updated interiors, holding their value over the years.
The Viking 57 Convertible has a length overall of 57’10” and a wide 18’2” beam with a draft of 4’11”—great for cruising the islands! Standard fuel capacity is 1,490 gallons (optional 1,685 gallons) and water capacity is 240 gallons. Holding tank capacity is 125 gallons. Gross weight with standard fuel load is 78,960 lbs.
