Merritt’s 78ft sportfish, custom built to order in 1998, was the largest hull built by Merritt Yachts at that time and appears to be the only 78-footer Roy Merritt built. It was also one of the first boats to utilize the 1800 hp DDC-MTU 2000 series diesel engines with sequential turbocharging for powerful acceleration to quickly get her up on plane. With these engines, the Merritt 78 ran at a top speed of about 36 knots at 2,250 rpm and 30 knots at 1,900 rpm when tested back in 2001. Dropping down to a leisurely 23 knots at 1,600 rpm would give the Merritt 78 a range of 1,000 nautical miles with a 2,700-gallon fuel capacity.
The open flybridge’s teak dashboard console and helm pod position all screens and controls within easy view and reach of captain. Bow thruster and joystick controls make docking and close quarter maneuvering easy to manage. Generous guest seating, with storage underneath, is forward of the console for a comfortable place to socialize and enjoy the view under shade of the Merritt hardtop that can be weather proofed with an Isinglass enclosure. Outfitted to the owner’s personal fishing style, the immense 195 sq ft cockpit is replete with fishing amenities such as the insulated fishbox plumbed to an Eskimo shaved ice machine, large freezer on starboard side, and bulkhead lockers with refrigerator, bait freezer, and a bait prep center, and outriggers for trolling baits.
The interior features Merritt’s characteristic beautifully finished wood joinery and furniture for a refined and elegant relaxing ambience. Gourmet galley and traditional dining area are forward of main salon for maximum social interaction. The lower-level accommodations include a huge master suite with king-size berth and ensuite head. Each stateroom has its own TV with satellite controls and the crew cabin has direct engine room access. Storage is built into every possible space for extra rods, reels, tackle, provisions, and more as needed for longer fishing trips or cruises with family.
