Merritt sportfish boats are custom-built to order; true bespoke yachts designed and built by Merritt’s Boat and Engine Works, family owned and operated in Pompano Beach, FL since 1948, at the emergence of recreational sportfishing yachts. Early models were designed for the popular tuna tournament in Cat Cay, Bahamas, where the tuna tower was first developed and used.
The Merritt 72 of the recent two decades, and currently available for new construction, were designed to satisfy the customer’s purpose for the boat—whether tournament circuit fishing, chasing trophy pelagic fish around the world, or combining recreational fishing and other watersport activities with family cruising.
United Yacht Sales would be pleased to help you find the right Merritt Yacht for sale, or sell your existing vessel, with one of our professional brokers. We have experts on staff that specialize in the sale or new build of custom sportfish.
The Merritt 72’s proven hull with high flared bow, sharp entry, gently sloping sheerline, tumblehome, oval exhausts, flush foredeck, and group of four hullside vents set just aft of midships, are just a few of the Merritt exterior distinctives. Chines below the waterline, run the length of the hull from bow to transom for enhanced stability and prop tunnels lower the vessel’s draft, among other benefits. Merritt 72 models powered by twin 1800 hp CAT C32 ACERT or 2400 hp MTU diesels, along with power assisted hydraulic steering and thrusters, maneuver on big feisty gamefish with amazing agility and speed. The Merritt 72 delivers a steady, dry comfortable ride, slicing through head seas, planing with negligible bowrise. She is solidly built of epoxy-infused multidirectional e-glass and carbon fiber that is vacuum-bagged with Core-Cell composite coring for maximum lightweight strength—important factors, along with a well-positioned center of gravity, for efficient performance.
Merritt’s excellent master-crafted woodwork, book-matched gloss teak, and premium stone countertops bestow a rich, traditional ambience throughout the yacht—from cockpit and mezzanine decks, exterior brightwork, classic flybridge helm pod, to interior joinery—paneling, cabinetry, furnishings, doors, and trim. Merritt is known for its ability to seamlessly combine the latest technology with timeless classic elegance in its exterior and interior design, for a true American custom sportfish yacht, capable of raising fish at any fishing ground and cruising in quiet comfort.
Versatility is designed into the 72 Merritt; the hi-lo cocktail table that is surrounded by a large settee on the starboard side of the salon, rises up and the table folds out for a dining area that seats up to eight, in addition to the dinette that seats four! The open galley is fully equipped to prep meals for a large party and extended cruises; storage is everywhere—under seating, cabinetry, drawers, lockers, in-deck—wherever available space could be utilized. Another notable feature is the tournament-sized cockpit’s tuna door that overlaps at the bottom to form a narrow step. A dive ladder could be mounted into the step for lobster season diving! The Merritt’s 5’6” draft allows it into shallower waters near reefs and islands. The tuna door overlap also prevents water from coming through the door when backing down on a fish.
Besides the many fishing accoutrements specified by the owner and often added later as upgrades, high end entertainment electronics have become a popular option or upgrade item. A 72ft Merritt recently sold by United Yacht Sales, featured a Crestron Audio/Visual system for multiple HDTVs integrated with the Kaleidescape 4K movie player and server system. This technology provides “an immersive home cinema experience” that supports audio and video quality that is “better than most commercial theaters!” The movie server component can download and store terabytes of 4K movies—more than anyone will have time to watch, with so many recreational activities to enjoy. The main entertainment center is located in cabinetry across from the large leather settee in the salon. The cockpit mezzanine featured another popular option—air conditioning, for a comfortable shaded perch to view the cockpit’s live action as the angler in a Merritt custom fighting chair battles a giant billfish!
Merritt 72 specifications (based on 2004, 2007 and 2009 models): LOA (length overall) ranged from 72’-72’3” with beam ranging from 19’6 -19’9” and draft ranging from 5’6”-6’ max.
