The Hatteras GT63 Convertible was part of the new GT (Gran Turismo) series designed by Hatteras to appeal to the world-class tournament and sport fisherman. The GT63 is styled and built to compete with custom-built sportfish convertible yachts, with the advantages of Hatteras’ more than 50 years of innovative design and world-wide reputation of producing high-quality, seaworthy, tournament-level yachts. Several design features are patented and unique to Hatteras. For the GT63, the proficient Hatteras design team collaborated with renowned naval architectural firm, Donald L Blount & Associates (DLBA) to transform the heavy battlewagon convertibles, as powerful and great as they are, into the lighter, faster, more efficient, and beautifully styled tournament fishing and cruising yachts of the GT Series.

The goal was for this sportfishing yacht to reach a top speed of over 40 knots which was achieved and then some, to even faster mid-40s in flat calm seas, when powered by twin 1,900 hp CAT C32A diesels, one of three engine power options (1,600 and 1,800 are the others). The classic Hatteras variable degree deadrise transitions from deep-V 50-degrees at midships to 8-degrees at transom for optimal stability and performance, along with prop pockets that reduce shaft angle to 6-degrees, and a shallow keel. Hatteras will never compromise the solid fiberglass hull bottom that the brand is known for, and uses a solid, closed cell foam for coring above the waterline. To reduce overall weight, Hatteras builds the hull with a 60% fiberglass to 40% resin infusion ratio for stronger but lighter and consistent laminates. Stringers, bulkheads, decks, and certain other parts are also vacuum infused to decrease weight while adding strength. Weight has been reduced with a new lower gear reduction of 2.52:1 and high-performance propeller blades, able to turn faster with less diameter. The GT63 is able to produce a much tighter turn at cruising speeds with the new mechanical differential-steering system that is a feature of the GT Series.
Another Hatteras innovation is the UL-approved fiberglass baffled fuel tank that is an integral part of the hull sitting on the keel. The low, centerline placement adds to the boat’s roll stability by lowering the center of gravity, vertical and longitudinal. With a large single tank, there’s no need to transfer between fuel tanks, simplifying fuel management. New to the GT63 are the engine room air intakes that are from inside the cockpit gunwales, instead of the conventional large hull side openings. This eliminates the need for demisting equipment or large air intake boxes, providing more space outboard of the engines for walk-around inspection. As standard Hatteras engine room construction, both engines are bolted to mounting plates and set between stringers to reduce vibration transfer to the hull. Hatteras has designed the engine room with crew in mind, to be easily maintained. The engine room is accessed from the mezzanine of the cockpit by lifting a section of seating to reveal the stairway leading to the watertight door.
The 20’ beam of the Hatteras GT63 provides significant advantages throughout the yacht. Engine room space is increased along with living areas, cockpit and flybridge. Salon and staterooms are roomier, berths are wider, and the dinette is deeper, seating 5 adults. The added beam increases stability when running, at anchor, or drifting in beam seas. The updated Hatteras hull with convex foresections, fine entry, and flared bow contribute to the GT63’s comfortable, dry ride. The GT63’s cockpit is 173 sq ft of uncluttered fishing space and mezzanine seating shaded by the flybridge overhang is ready to battle gamefish. Beneath the upper-level seating is insulated storage or optional 8 cubic foot freezer; in level just below, is the standard bait box. Access to lazarette and engine room is in center mezzanine under seat. Two large in-deck fishboxes with macerators are standard. A bait prep center with storage, tackle drawers, and a pull-out cutting board is located forward to starboard; angled ladder to flybridge is above prep center. A chilled box could be connected to an optional Eskimo ice machine. Steps leading to the salon have a built-in self-draining wet storage locker and a large drink box capable of holding 4 beverage cases. Under the starboard gunwale is a compartment to store gaff and boathook. Shore power connectors are also enclosed. Huge cleats are bolted through to backing plates and a backing plate is built into the cockpit deck for installing an optional fighting chair or leaning post with rod holders. Transom features a large tuna door and fishbox that can be plumbed for optional livewell. Cockpit could be customized to owner’s desires with Pipewelders outriggers and tower, optional teak cockpit sole and more.
Open flybridge is standard and features tournament-style helm pod with single-lever controls. Hydraulic steering and new mechanical differential-steering system achieve greater maneuverability and exceptional handling. Helm console has space for 3 displays and other navigation equipment. Hardtop has overhead compartments for other electronics and optional electric teaser reels. Helm chair has removable back for facing forward or aft to stern. All-around clean lines of sight, including aft cockpit. Flybridge has plenty of forward guest seating with storage underneath and compartment for optional freezer unit in front of console. Hatteras also offered an enclosed bridge version of the GT63 that additionally could have a spiral staircase to the salon for those desiring air-conditioned, year-round comfortable cruising.
Main deck entry from cockpit is an automatic sliding door that is actuated by a pushbutton in bulkhead. The beautiful, spacious salon features L-shaped sofa to port opposite cabinetry with 42” flatscreen TV, Bose theatrical sound system, and icemaker. The optional spiral staircase would be in the aft starboard corner for access to the enclosed bridge of the GT63 EFB model. The GT63’s wide 20’ beam allows a deeper dinette capable of seating 5 adults, forward to portside, with the full open galley opposite to starboard. Galley features Amtico flooring and an island with 2 stools on the bar side. Appliances include 4-burner ceramic stovetop, drawer-style undercounter refrigerator/freezer units, and microwave/convection oven and could be customized by owner. Frameless, tinted windows on 3 sides light up the entire main deck and provide wonderful views. Air-conditioning is discreetly distributed via vents in port and starboard side valances. Hatteras fit and finish is of the highest quality—high-gloss teak is standard throughout interior with raised wood paneling and wainscoting as an option. Solid surface counters in galley and heads are standard; owners could opt for granite or other personal choices.
Companionway leads down to the standard 4-stateroom, 3-head accommodations layout. Large ensuite master with queen berth is located midships to starboard and the VIP guest stateroom with queen berth is forward with private head. Master featured leather panel headboard and leather wall covering framing a flatscreen TV. The two other guest staterooms with over/under single bunks share the third head. All heads have separate stall showers. Forward of guest head is a laundry closet with stacked washer and dryer units. Hatteras offered two optional 3-stateroom layouts with variations, and each could be further customized by owner.
The GT63 is an opulent, comfortable convertible yacht for cruising and entertaining, without compromising its excellent fishability and seakeeping. United Yacht sales is uniquely experienced in helping clients sell and purchased a used Hatteras Yacht.
