The Hatteras 64 Convertible was designed by the Hatteras design team from the keel up with a beam of 19.5 feet, giving the 64C a number of advantages when compared with other convertibles in its class. The extra beam width not only resulted in larger cockpit, flybridge, and interior living area spaces, but added stability in combination with the boat’s more than 100,000-lb heft. A solidly-build, heavy stable boat is appreciated in challenging inlets and rough seas, powering through without creaking, rattling, or shuddering. Hatteras convertibles have a deserved reputation of strength, power, and endurance—able to chase down trophy fish in toughest conditions and get back to port safely. The 64 Convertible has an updated hull design that went from Jack Hargrave’s original slightly concave forward sections to slightly convex to reduce impact, give a softer re-entry. The proven hull bottom with variable degree deadrise flattening at stern and prop tunnels combine with the wider beam for a 4’10” draft capable of entering shallower harbors and islands cruising.

The 64 Convertible effortlessly converts from fishing battlewagon to luxury cruising yacht. The extra beam allowed Hatteras to design accommodations with very generous space, including a full-beam master stateroom with king-size berth located amidships, and a large VIP stateroom forward. A master stateroom dresser could be replaced with a settee or office desk. Master stateroom also featured opening portholes in starboard and port sides. A third stateroom to port has two single bunks with generous space between them. Each has ensuite head with stall shower. Hatteras offered 2 additional layouts, including a 4-stateroom, 3-head version and several variations, and owners could request their own variation. In fact, Hatteras offered more options and choices than any other production builder.
The open salon features a U-shaped sectional sofa with rod storage beneath opposite starboard side cabinetry with 42” TV and surround sound entertainment center. Galley (portside) and C-shaped dinette are one-step up and forward of salon, giving the master stateroom 7’7” headroom. The peninsula galley features solid surface or optional granite countertops with 3 drawer-style undercounter SubZero refrigerator/freezer units. Standard appliances include 4-burner ceramic cooktop and microwave/convection oven. Owners could opt for trash compactor, disposal, and more. Known for its world-class woodwork, Hatteras offered American black cherry with either gloss or satin finish in the 64C along with Euro-style fixtures and hardware for a truly upscale look. Air-conditioning was dispersed via the wood valences instead of grates. Storage was built into every available space.
The 64C’s enormous obstruction-free 164 sq ft cockpit includes a two-level mezzanine with cushioned seating and choice of bait freezer, livewell, or insulated storage tub, and bait-prep station with tackle drawers built into the two levels for easy cockpit access. Gaffs, washdowns, and shore connections are concealed out of the way. Two in-sole 62” fishboxes are equipped with macerators and could be outfitted with optional chipped ice machine. In-deck backing plate is standard for adding a fighting chair or leaning post with rocket launcher rod holder. Owners could customize cockpit to preferred fishing style or for socializing.
The standard open flybridge with drop-down curtains also benefitted from increased beam, with its 186 sq ft area offering excellent views of surroundings and especially, the cockpit. Pod style helm console with single lever controls on either side allowed captain to face aft when backing down on fish, or easily back into a slip. Hydraulic steering and deep reduction gears allow the 64C to handle like a much smaller boat, twisting and turning, and is stable as a rock at trolling speeds (or at anchor). Electronics panel is electronically actuated to retract when not in use. Two swiveling helm chairs are standard and guest seating wraps the area forward of helm console and has rod storage underneath. An aft-facing jump seat is to starboard of helm and has a drink cooler below. Freezer unit was optional. Hatteras offered an enclosed flybridge option configured with forward centerline helm (single chair), L-shaped settee along port and aft sides, and bar sink and refrigerator on aft starboard side. A control pod is aft on outside bridge deck for backing down. Additionally, a circular staircase to salon from the enclosed bridge could be ordered for ultimate entertainment set-up.
The 64 Convertible’s huge 7-blade 40x68 propellers and 3:1 gear ratio, along with powerful 1800 HP CAT C-32A diesels move the boat from cruising to top speed in seconds yet allow the 64C to turn on center point at slow trolling speeds and back down without taking water over the transom. If green water should spill over in rough seas, large scuppers quickly clear cockpit. The 4” diameter prop shafts are angled in molded hull bottom prop pockets for shallower draft and nearly horizontal prop thrust for greater efficiency and performance. Every mechanical and hull design feature has been proven to produce superior seaworthiness, handling, and stability. Hatteras has a worldwide reputation for strong, durable fishing yachts that offer luxury motor yacht quality cruising comfort.
The Hatteras 64 Convertible has a length of 63’10” and 19’6” beam. Draft is only 4’10”. Weight ranges for 100,000 to 115,000 lbs. depending on options. Fuel capacity is 1,950 gallons and freshwater is 343 gallons. Holding tank is 105 gallons. Hull is Hatteras standard modified-V with 2-degree aft deadrise.
