The popular Hatteras 60 convertible has been in production previously from 1977-1986, when Hatteras Yachts was owned by AMF, to Genmar’s acquisition (1985). The redesigned 60 Convertible in 1998 incorporated many of the modern Hatteras engineering and design features that are inherent to the Hatteras convertibles today.

Hatteras engineers and designers have focused on improving the performance, fishability and styling—both exterior and interior of the Convertible 60. The solid modified-V hull—convex at bow sides for a softer ride, cored at hull sides for lightweight strength, deep keel and prop tunnels, variable degree deadrise that is nearly flat at transom for greater stability, and a deep forefoot and flared bow to conquer head seas, are what Hatteras is known for worldwide. Double chines run the length of hull and longitudinal running strakes provide increased stability and improve tracking. Transom was styled with noticeable tumblehome to look more like custom convertible yachts. These are some of the standard design and construction features and the basis for the renowned Hatteras seaworthy performance in challenging sea conditions.
The 60 Convertible’s deckhouse and bridge was redesigned, and it was restyled with a long foredeck, graceful sheerline, and a huge cockpit rigged for tournament fishing with in-deck fishboxes, bait prep and tackle center and other amenities. The popular 3-stateroom, 3-head layout was updated in 2003 (galley and master stateroom). Several other floorplans were available. Wide cabin side windows were frameless for a sleek modern look and to maximize interior natural light. The engine room was finished, making it bright and easy to clean. Owners were offered a choice of interior woodwork, among many other personal choices. Three different power packages were offered: Detroit 12V-92TA/1104hp, Detroit 16V-92TA/1472hp, or Caterpillar 3412CTA/1649hp. The mid-size powerplant produced a top speed of 35 knots and a cruise speed of 32 knots.
The 2007 Hatteras 60 Convertible showed a greater trend away from previous traditional lines looking more like a custom sportfish convertible yacht, with its raked back deckhouse and bridge. The redesigned cockpit featured a mezzanine deck with built-in storage and a tackle center. Interior was upgraded to include an L-shaped sofa with rod storage underneath and the full galley included two Sub-Zero drawer-style refrigerator/freezer units. Other amenities included an entertainment center with 42” flatscreen TV in salon cabinetry, beautiful, fluted valances and high gloss or satin finishes throughout.
Hatteras continued to refine the hull based on the original legendary hulls designed by American yacht design icon, Jack Hargrave. Hatteras utilized a new construction method for the 2007 version with resin-infusion.
The hullsides, stringers, structural bulkheads and decks were cored with the lightweight strength of Divinycell PVC foam and resin-infused at a 60 glass/40 resin ratio (rather than hand-laid fiberglass) for higher strength with lower weight and uniform hull structure with a more precise fit of components. Cabin bulkheads remained solid wood with superb joinery craftsmanship, the legacy of North Carolina’s furniture industry. The Hatteras design team and engineers strive to balance wave-crushing seakeeping weight with the high-speed performance and fuel efficiency of a lighter weight hull. The solid fiberglass bottom and strong, durable hull construction will never be compromised, as the Hatteras brand has built its reputation on its powerful seakeeping hull and fishability.
Hatteras’ interior furnishings, décor, and quality of fit and finish offer the understated elegant comfort of high-end motoryachts. The spacious salon with open U-shaped galley and dinette that seats four, are well-designed for relaxing and entertaining. The L-shaped salon settee with rod storage below is on aft portside opposite cabinets and flatscreen TV. Full galley features specially designed glass and bottle storage, 4-burner stovetop, convection/microwave oven, and two undercounter refrigerator/freezer drawer units. Two galley configurations were offered. All three staterooms could have private heads with separate shower stalls as an optional layout; 3/2 was standard and another optional layout was for 4 staterooms/3 heads. Master and forward guest stateroom have queen berths; third stateroom has over/under bunks and could be used for crew. All accommodations have plenty of storage.
The 151 sq ft cockpit set-up includes a large drop-in bait freezer, in-deck fishbox with macerator, molded in-transom fishbox with drain, fresh and saltwater washdowns, plenty of rod holders, and mounting plate in center deck for optional fighting chair. Another popular option was fishbox freezers for keeping the catch on ice. Flybridge overhang shades anglers and guests on cockpit boxes (1998-2006) or on mezzanine seating (2007-2012) and provides cockpit lighting on underside.
Standard open flybridge configuration is typical of convertible sportfishers, with center helm console, Palm Beach style helm pod and single-lever engine controls. Optional Tournament Console with power-actuated electronics array was available. Standard flush-mounted and overhead electronics included Northstar GPS/Plotter, Icom VHF, Simrad autopilot and Simrad depth and temperature indicators.
Murray Brothers teak helm chairs are standard. Flybridge features forward guest seating, portside bench seat with rod storage, and insulated drink box (freezer was optional). Flybridge could be fully enclosed and air-conditioned with an interior stairwell to the salon, as an owner option. Tower, outriggers, and other special equipment and amenities were also available as options. Electronics could be owner-upgraded as well.
In 2007, the cockpit of the 60 Convertible was redesigned with a mezzanine deck that featured a single large deep freezer compartment in upper port mezzanine. Lower mezzanine has single icebox sized to hold standard commercial bait trays. Starboard mezzanine has tackle center with drawers and large ice bin for bait storage box, fish boxes, etc. Engine room access is centerline in mezzanine. Chilled drink box and wet boxes are located in the steps leading to salon door. Two large fishboxes located fore and aft in cockpit deck are standard.
Standard engines are twin 1550hp Caterpillar C30 diesels with top speed of 35-36 knots and seven-blade Nibral props in tunnels for under 5ft draft. Cruising speed is 30-31 knots. You can still find similar used Hatteras boats on the brokerage market today.
The Hatteras 60 Convertible length overall is 59’10” with a 19’ beam and 4’9” draft. Fuel capacity is 1800 gallons, freshwater is 200 gallons, and holding tank is 100 gallons. Weight is 85,000 lbs.
