SPEAK TO A SALES PROFESSIONAL

Maine’s pristine pine forests and beautiful rugged coastline dotted with islands, iconic lighthouses, quaint towns, lobster shacks, and deep maritime history have long been an attraction to visitors and boaters. The south coast beach towns are popular summer vacation spots, offering outdoor recreation—beaches, boating, sailing, fishing, hiking along with dining, shopping, cultural attractions, and family fun activities. Mt Katahdin in Baxter’s State Park (loaded with moose) is an endpoint of the famed Appalachian Trail. Acadia National Park with its thick pine forests, granite and spruce islands, is the only national park in the New England region and one of the nation’s most visited with 3.5 million visits annually. Maine is the easternmost state of the United States, and the northeastern most of the 50 contiguous states. Maine is the largest of the New England states and is bordered on the west by New Hampshire, the Canadian provinces of Quebec on northwest and New Brunswick on Northeast. The Gulf of Maine and Atlantic Ocean are to southeast.

Prior to statehood, Maine was primarily agricultural and today is the #1 US producer of wild lowbush blueberries and a major producer of potatoes, apples, maple syrup and sweet corn, along with dairy products and chicken eggs. And of course, lobster, oysters, seaweed, and other seafood are available fresh from the sea. Since the 1980s, Maine has seen a surge in small scale vegetable specialty farms (such as organic) and gardens—kickstarted by the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Assoc., fueling the farm-to-table restaurant trend and attracting talented chefs from all over that have elevated the city of Portland to “America’s Foodiest Small Town” (Bon Appetit magazine). The once rundown Portland harbor front, Old Port is now the prime cobblestoned downtown location of 5-star bistros, coffee shops, trendy art scene, boutiques, and other cultural attractions in refurbished Federal-style buildings. Portland has the most restaurants per capita than any other US city, from nationally acclaimed restaurants to pubs in restored historic buildings to street food and lobster shacks. It is also a major hub for Maine’s fishing and seafood industries.

Portland is also a coffee town, ranked among the Top 10 Coffee Cities in America, with many neighborhood coffee shops sourcing and roasting their own beans. Tandem Coffee is one of the top coffee roasters in Maine; Coffee By Design (since 1994) is Roasting Magazine’s 2020 Roaster of the Year in the entire nation. Other notable coffee shops are Bard Coffee, Speckled Ax, Arabica Coffee House, Baristas & Bites, Little Woodfords, and more. Greater Portland area is known for its craft beers and its many pubs, microbreweries, wine bars, taverns. The organic grain grown in Maine led to the boom in craft beer, especially in Portland. Bissell Brothers Brewing developed the New England style IPA and was a major influence on the craft industry and IPA brewing.

Greater Portland and Casco Bay is Maine’s largest metro area stretching from Casco Bay in east to Sebago Lake in west, south to Scarborough and north to Freeport. Portland is a quaint, yet sophisticated, walkable city of cobblestone streets overflowing with cultural history, arts, award-winning chefs and cuisine. It once rivaled New York and Boston in the early 19th century with professional theater; today professional theater has revived, along with ballet, and musical performances. The Portland Arts District features galleries, antique shops, studios, and performance venues along Congress Street.

The Acadia and Downeast area has a long heritage of early (1604) French settlers and even today French and English are listed as Maine’s languages. World-famous Bar Harbor is on Mount Desert Island and Frenchman’s Bay, the gateway to Acadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain, which encompasses over 46,000 acres along with several towns and villages, miles of shoreline, 125 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of carriage roads. With its amazing coastal beauty, Bar Harbor was the vacation destination in the 19th century for the wealthy elite from New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago, and elsewhere, such as the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Morgans, and Henry Ford, who built luxurious summer homes on the island. Bar Harbor is the birthplace of Nelson Rockefeller. His father, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. designed and built the 45 miles of scenic carriage roads on Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park from 1913-1940 using local granite for the crushed stone roadbeds, large coping stones, and bridges. Other carriage road features are the signposts and gate lodges. Bar Harbor continues as a haven for the rich and famous to this day and a popular tourist destination.

Deep water (110-175ft) Somes Sound is a fjard (similar to a fjord) that extends into Mount Desert Island dividing it in two. Its depth allows large ships to navigate nearly its entire length, making it an ideal location for boat builders, such as Hinckley Yachts. Maine has an enduring tradition of shipbuilding. Its shipyards in the 18th and 19th centuries produced the wooden sailing ships (sloops, schooners, brigs, brigantines, barks, Down Easters) used to transport cargo or passengers overseas and were a major source of Maine’s economy. When the wooden sailing ship market declined after the Civil War, shipyards in Maine continued building the cargo transporting square-rigged Down Easter deep sea sailing ships, which had economic advantages (deeper holds, simpler to sail) over the clipper ships, until around 1902. Steamships and steel vessels replaced the commercial wooden sailing ships in late 19th – early 20th centuries. Pennellville Historic District in Brunswick, Maine features the shipyard owned by the Pennell family. Other shipbuilding families of that era were the Skolfields and the Morses.

Another type of Downeast boat style emerged in the latter 20th century in Maine based on the fast lobster boats built by Will Frost in the 1920s in Jonesport, Maine. Will Frost, whose father and grandfather built square-rigged Down Easters, developed the semi-displacement hull at the time fishing boats were transitioning from sail to power. Engines were not very powerful back then, so Will designed the hull to be extremely efficient, able to get up on plane and go fast by using air induction vents that allowed air to flow through the bottom, providing an air cushion lift out of the water, similar in principle to the stepped hull design of high-performance boats today. Will Frost’s torpedo stern Redwing is considered the origin of modern Maine lobster boats. The “Jonesporters” as they came to be known, were characterized by long sweeping sheer forward and low aft freeboard, high bow, narrow beam, square stern (later), pilothouse and low-slung cabin positioned just a bit forward of amidships for a low center of gravity. This kept windage low, minimizing roll in heavy seas. Built strong and rugged for hauling lobster pots and nets over the side onto the large aft deck area and to get home safely.

These qualities of durability, efficiency, and the pretty lines of these speedy Downeast lobster boats popularized the style for recreational cruising boats. Today there are many Downeast boat builders, as this classic “lobster boat”design continues to be in great demand. Some notable Maine builders include Hinckley Yachts, Downeast Custom Boats, Wesmac Custom Boats, SW Boatworks (Calvin Beal Boats), Wilbur Yachts, Lowell Brothers (Marine Lobster Boats), Atlantic Boat Company (Duffy), Holland, Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding Company, and Northern Bay.
Some boaters argue that Boothbay Harbor is truly where the Maine coast begins for cruising, as Boothbay is a boater’s bliss with inviting inlets, harbors, and passages, dramatic coastal landscape, granite shoals, and seals and porpoises frolicking in the bays. Historic lighthouses mark harbor entrances. Maine is very welcoming with many marinas and moorings available for cruising boaters. Here are just a few notable marinas of many; check Dockwa.com for more marina information.
