Introduced new in 1998, the Hatteras 70ft convertible sportfish yacht with 18ft beam offered motor yacht like comfort without compromising the handling, maneuverability, and features of a serious tournament fishing boat.
Based on the time-tested, tournament-proven hull form designed by famed naval architect, Jack Hargrave, this massive 118,000 lb. yacht is easily turned by one finger, thanks to the power steering system used for the helm. Additionally, the preferred optional twin Detroit V-2000 diesels that power the 70 Convertible are well-matched to this boat. The conventional Hatteras modified-V hull with variable deadrise, long keel, molded in-hull prop tunnels, side strakes, double chines, and high flared bow give the Hatteras Convertibles the comfortable, dry, efficient, and stable ride for which Hatteras is known around the world. Huge 7-blade propellers driven by powerful diesels drive the solidly built 70 Convertible to slice through rough inlets and seas without flinching, rolling, or pounding, while flared bow and chines toss aside spray.

The 18ft beam of the 70 Convertible not only adds to the spaciousness of the interior living areas, but the bi-level cockpit is 185 sq ft of fish-fighting space and fishing amenities. The elevated mezzanine deck with cushioned seating and stainless-steel railing provides a safe place to observe the action or watch baits, out of anglers’ way. The mezzanine (or observation deck) is shaded by the overhang of the extended flybridge deck. The raised level provides convenient space for large freezers, chill boxes, storage lockers and tackle storage areas; a huge fishbox and an optional Eskimo icemaker are also built into the top level of mezzanine. Two large in-deck fishboxes with macerators are standard, along with an in-transom box that could be plumbed for a livewell. A built-in deck plate for optional fighting chair or teak table is standard. Of course, Hatteras offered many options for customizing the cockpit fishing set-up to the owner’s preferred style. Cockpit area is large enough to accommodate deck chairs around the table (option) for enjoying sunset cocktails. Engine room is easily accessed from a hatch under the steps to salon that lift on gas-assisted struts.
The enclosed bridge of this large convertible is luxuriously appointed with guest seating, air-conditioning/heating, large helm console for all necessary flush-mounted electronics, two fully adjustable helm chairs, and optional wet bar and elegant spiral staircase (available 2002-2003) down to the salon next to the dinette. For cockpit visibility and backing up, Hatteras added an excellent outside aft bridge deck control station with a pod style helm and single lever controls along with buttons for trolling valves and low-idle modes. Helm included space for a full electronics package (depth finder, GPS, radio, temperature gauge). To starboard, a cushioned seat allowed guests to enjoy the view from above. Access to an optional tower/outriggers was via a center-mounted ladder, and access to the bridge from cockpit is through a hatch that could be tightly latched either open or closed. Flybridge hardtop was extended to shade the bridge aft deck. Hatteras also offered an open bridge layout for the 70 Convertible.
Interior appointments are also luxurious, as Hatteras has always aspired to balance tournament-level fishing with the comforts of a luxury cruising yacht. The exceptional fit and finish of all interior woodwork has been a Hatteras hallmark since the first sportfish boat was built in 1960. The 70 Convertible is no exception; while there are variations in materials, finishes, and accommodation layouts, the well-designed living spaces are spacious and comfortable; ideal for extended cruises or reaching distant fishing spots. Cruising the islands and shallower coastal waters isn’t an issue with the 70 Convertible’s 5’4” draft and solid fiberglass bottom.
The amidships master stateroom is full beam with king-size berth and features built-in dressers, nightstands, desk area, and cedar-lined closets. Ensuite head has separate stall shower (and tub in some versions). To port is a stateroom that could be crew’s quarters with over/under bunks and to starboard is a guest stateroom with single bunks that could convert to a double. The VIP guest stateroom with centerline queen berth and plenty of built-in storage is in the forepeak. Each has private head with separate stall shower and VacuFlush head. A stacked washer and dryer are in a laundry closet in the companionway. On either side of the companionway stairs, inside the bulkheads, are the air-conditioning and water pumps in rooms insulated for sound and heat. The pumps are easy to access and keep the engine room uncluttered.
Wide open salon features an L-shaped sofa portside, coffee table, wet bar, wood blinds on the large frameless windows, entertainment center with flatscreen TV and sound system and plenty of storage in cabinets and drawers under seating. Forward and separated by a step up, is the full galley and dinette level, giving the master stateroom below more headroom. Galley can be partially walled-off from the salon if a full-size upright side-by-side refrigerator/freezer unit was opted, instead of undercounter drawer-style units. A serving counter is on the end, above the salon wet bar. Galley appliances can include dishwasher, 4-burner electric stovetop, garbage disposal, and microwave/convection oven, depending on options selected by owner. Galley is directly opposite and open to the U-shaped dinette on starboard side. Dinette table could be standard Avonite solid-surface or upgraded to granite, along with all countertops throughout.
Many used Hatteras Yachts have been well-maintained and upgraded over the years to retain high resale values. They are well-built to Hatteras’ high standards for durability, performance, and comfort (Hatteras engineering and technical staff contributed to ABYC marine building standards books).
The overall length of the Hatteras 70 convertible is 70’3” with a beam of 18’ and a 5’4” draft. Bridge clearance without tower is 22’1.” Headroom is 6’6.” Fuel capacity is 2,000 gallons, freshwater is 365 gallons, and holding tank is 60 gallons. Displacement weight is 118,000 lbs. Modified-V hull with 5-degree transom deadrise. Minimum cockpit depth is 2’11.”
Standard power is twin 1,310 hp Caterpillar 3412 diesels through bolted to pretapped steel plates that run the length of the engine room. Optional power choices are twin diesel inboards up to 1,800 hp, such as the Detroit Diesel 16-V 2000 DDEC diesel inboards that can cruise the 70 Convertible at around 28 knots and reach a top speed of 32-33 knots.
