The versatile 55 Convertible is perfect for hardcore fishing excursions and extended family cruises. While just three years in production, the 55 Convertible was a popular sportfish model based on the previous Hatteras 54 Convertible produced 1991-1998. A major innovative change in 1999 was the modification of the hull running bottom to incorporate propeller pockets, changing the angle of the shafts for greater prop thrust efficiency, speed, and shallower draft advantages. It is considered by some to be “one of the best hulls Hatteras ever produced.”

The 55 Convertible’s superstructure and flybridge were restyled to a more modern sleeker look with frameless side windows and curved flybridge wings, while the interior 3-stateroom, 2-head layout remained essentially the same as the older 54 Convertible. The well-designed floorplan with its wide-open salon, low-profile peninsula galley and dinette is ideal for entertaining or relaxing. A flatscreen TV and entertainment center (owner options) are mounted/built into the forward starboard bulkhead, above the dinette. A washer and dryer are in a closet at the bottom of the 4-step companionway leading to the sleeping accommodations. Master stateroom is amidships to port and features a walkaround queen berth and ensuite head; cabinetry has been upgraded to the level of the larger Hatteras yachts. Forward VIP guest stateroom also features a queen island berth. Guest stateroom to starboard has over and under bunks. Interior showcases Hatteras’ flawless woodwork and fit and finish throughout.
he open flybridge with hardtop has cushioned bench seats with storage beneath on the forward side of helm console and portside of bridge deck; a storage cabinet is in forward area. Center console features a pod-style helm with single lever engine controls and two helm chairs. The optional power lift electronics panel operates at touch of a button and the viewing angle can be adjusted to avoid glare. Seven rod holder rocket launchers are mounted on the aft railing of flybridge where the extended deck overhangs the cockpit below. Tuna tower is an owner option along with other special equipment such as outriggers.
The huge 9’ long x 13’ wide cockpit provides a top-notch tournament fishing set-up with an enlarged 6’2” L x 1’8” W x 1’6” deep fishwell under the non-slip sole that can be refrigerated and outfitted with a macerator pump as additional options. The transom fishbox can be connected to an Eskimo shaved icemaker fed from a watermaker in the engine room below. Or it can be plumbed as a livewell, as can the deep locker starboard of the salon door (better for larger baits). Portside features a bait and tackle center with an insulated sink, cutting board, and equipment drawers; drop-in bait freezer, and engine room access. Convenient toe steps allow hands-free opening of cabinets. Lazarettes are accessed via locking hatches on either side of fishwell. Tuna door in transom.
Noise levels are kept to a low 72 decibels at trolling speed in cockpit with vibration dampers in lazarettes and side exhausts. At 2100 rpms, noise levels on bridge rose to only 89 decibels. CAT engine control module (ECM) automatically adjusts to optimize fuel use and emissions, speed acceleration, and improves fuel efficiency. Diesel fumes in cockpit are minimized or non-existent. The low idle control feature tapers prop revolutions so the boat can drag lures through the water at 6 knots; trolling valves are included with the CAT engine package to handle live bait assignments. Hatteras’ 6-blade props and low gear ratio provide extra torque for tractor-strength drive when plowing through 2-3 ft waves at WOT (wide open throttle) for a comfortable, vibration-free cruise. Performance and seaworthiness have always been a Hatteras characteristic since the first Jack Hargrave-designed boat in 1960—quite a legacy!
Length overall is 55’2” with a wide 17’4” beam and 5’4” draft. Weight is 74,000 lbs. Fuel capacity is 1320 gallons. Water tankage is 200 gallons and wastewater capacity is 100 gallons. Modified-V hull with 8-degree deadrise. 1999 model year engine options: Twin 1310hp Detroit Diesels 2000V-12 or 1358hp Caterpillar 3412E 12-V diesels.
